doing what you're afraid of can make you a better artist.
using the rules of art you learn in school is a great way to confuse yourself while you work. sometimes you have to make the same mistake twice to learn how to work your way out of it. the color wheel is your friend and your enemy. if something on your piece feels off, it probably is. if you're gonna paint portraits you have to take the face literally. it helps to break the big into the small--like the face into a nose and the nose into convex and concave shapes and those shapes into dark and into light. nobody thinks about your painting the way you think of your painting. if you want something to be different don't be shy about it. half of knowing what you want is deciding what you don't. art books are never not handy. the artist and the ego are a delicate thing--especially when your ego wants to smother another's ego in it's sleep. respect the deadlines you make for yourself--they count the most.
