WHAT I SAY

Bad decisions with good intentions.

I understand the urge for Reno to get on the map for something--for anything--positive. I understand the impatience. It's been an uphill struggle digging ourselves out of the recession and we've had to do it brick by brick, trade by trade.
However, good intentions don't make up for bad decisions.

In light of yesterday's decision on the Generator Phase 2 Project, I firmly believe that putting the reputation of Reno Art and this city's hardworking veteran artists in Schultz, Olivier, and the Generator's magical funder's hands is dangerous, is flimsy, is risky, and that time will tell the tale.

I realize this is an unpopular statement.
Allow me to explain.
I'm not against forward thought.
I'm not against jobs for artists or anyone for that matter.
I'm not against artist communities.
I'm not against taking chances and progressive thoughts in hopes of skyrocketing Reno's art community.
I'm not against Reno becoming an "arts destination."

I think this is just a poor, poor choice in leadership.

I am against blindly putting Reno's art future in the hands of these people. I've worked there. I was a resident artist there. It's a hypocritical shit show. This decision to basically gift them the Chism parcels (leased for a dollar a year?) is a decision without foresight, security, merit, or consideration. I think it makes folly of the hardworking people of the Dickerson Road/Chism/2nd Street community who have earned their property properly, without handouts, and toiled over it's future. It rides the coat tails of their hard work and twists it to suit a handful of immediate gratification seeking egos. It jeopardizes the integrity of Reno's current and veteran (I'm talking decades long) artists. Mushing them into the bold and compromising pile of Burning Man artists and lumping them in with that culture regardless of their history or their desire.
I guess my point is...

You can wrangle it your way... you can put a pretty fucking bow on it and call it progressive thought for the arts.... you can find new, willing people to scrub your toilets on at your demanding whim.... you can shave your beard any which asshole way... you can come up with thousands of dollars overnight... you can rebuild the sculpture you already milked this city to burn...
Yeah, you can "afford" something--

but did you earn it? I mean, really earn it?

I thought not.

Why don't you clap for that, Schieve.
